GOVERNORS

The Role of Governors

Recently we undertook a survey with parents to establish what they know about who we are, what we do, how we do it and how we engage with parents. This proved very helpful and as a result of the findings a couple of documents were prepared to save to the website, to provide all parents will information covered in the survey.

Please find below a Poster showing lots of the information and a copy of a presentation I provided to parents at a coffee morning a few weeks ago. Hope this is helpful.

Anyone wanting to know more about what we do as Governors, please contact school and we would be pleased to meet with you. We will also be attending coffee mornings and events and always happy for you to come over and have a chat. We very much value the views of all parents of our children to help us to provide them with the best learning experience possible.

Derek King (Chair of Governors)

Springwood Primary School Governors

Chair of Governor’s Profile – Mr Derek King
I have had the honour of being a governor at Spri
ngwood primary for 8 years and privileged to have been appointed as Chair of Governors for the past 3 years. I am also Chair of the Finance & Resources Committee, Vice Chair of Buildings and Health & Safety Committee and lead on Governor Training and Development.  I also attend Curriculum and E-safety Committee and I am a member of Friends of Springwood. My background is in management, governance, finance and risk management.
I love being part of the team at Springwood and having the opportunity to help provide the best possible learning experience for our children. I am very keen on the well-being of staff and pupils and I want every child to have the best chance to develop their skills and talents, in readiness for High school and beyond.

Emma Turner – Headteacher
I'm Emma Turner. I've been Headteacher at Springwood for the last 3 years and I absolutely love the school, the families and the children. I run the Glee Club and I love to watch the children grow in confidence through music, drama and performance. I've been a teacher for 20 years and I don't think I will ever get bored. We have a great governing body and I feel very lucky to be working with such wonderful members of the community.

Jess Gow
I have been a governor at Springwood Primary since 2017. Firstly as a Parent Governor whilst my three children attended Springwood and since 2021 as a Local Authority Governor.  It is a privilege to be able to do this role as I believe every child should have access to the best education, and education is the key to accessing opportunities.
Graduating with a BSc in Applied Psychology & Computing, I started my career in IT, changing directions to Audience Research and later Broadcast Strategy & Planning.  After a break to raise a family, and a series of part time roles I retrained and currently work in the creative sector as a freelance TV Production Coordinator.

Becky Pitt
Hello everyone, I've been a Community Governor at Springwood for the past 6 years. I have worked in the community that Springwood serves for the past 18 years as a teacher in St Teilo's High School. I have enjoy working alongside Emma, her team and the governing board to ensure high standards of achievement and happiness for all children and young people at Springwood.

Dean Morgan – Parent Governor
I am one of the Parent  governors and I have been lucky to have children and now grandchildren here at school. I moved to the area 15 years ago after I met and married my wife. I currently work in the financial department of Celtic Manor resort and have been there for 20 years. I enjoy music and films but my other passion is rugby and I have been a volunteer for 40 years where I progressed up to match day manager, looking after the ground setup and stewards. In school I am a member of Finance & Resources, Buildings and Health & Safety Committees.

Laura Ayre – Parent Governor
Hi my name is Laura and I am a parent governor.
Both of my children attend Springwood and receive significant support for their Additional Learning Needs. Since starting at Springwood in 2021 they have gained so much more confidence in themselves and settled into the school community very well.  I was so grateful for all the support offered to us as a family that I wanted to give back by helping to support the inner workings of school, when a parent governor position became available it seemed like a Great opportunity.
In my job I work supporting children with all different types of additional learning needs so wellbeing and inclusion is always at the forefront of my mind when looking at different school settings. I really enjoy visiting school and seeing how all the staff and children interact throughout the school day and I look forward to continuing working with such a wonderfully diverse and inclusive school.

Sian Lumby

I'm Sian Lumby. I have been a Class Teacher at Springwood for the last 5 years and I absolutely love the school, the families, and the children. I run a variety of sporting extra-curricular activities after-school and I thrive of how they grow in confidence and how they develop their ability to work in a team with their peers. Due to my previous background, it has always been my aim to encourage and impact positively on the amount of physical activity children take part in. Also, it has also been important for me to demonstrate as a good role model that both girls and boys can take part in all individual and team sports. I am part of a fantastic governing body and I feel very lucky to be working with such skillful and talented members of the community.

Governing Body LA Governor – Cllr Jess Moultrie
Hi! I am Jess Moultrie, and I am the Local Authority governor for Springwood Primary School. It is an honour to be on Springwood’s governing body and I hope to do the role justice for the children and parents of Springwood. I have lived in Pentwyn since I was a small child and I wanted to be able to make a positive difference in my area especially for future generations. I was elected as local councillor for Llanedeyrn and Pentwyn in 2022, which had seen me as the youngest elected at the time, and I took a keen interest in policy affecting children and young people. I felt that my skills as a Councillor could be helpful on Springwood’s governing body as I am on the ‘Children and Young Person’s Committee’ and the ‘Governance and Audit Committee,’ which has seen me be an effective critical friend when making decisions. I understand the importance of including everyone in my considerations when making decisions, so that inclusivity is reflected in the decisions made, so that education can be fair and accessible to everyone at Springwood Primary School

Sarah Perkins
Hi, my name is Sarah Perkins and I am a non-teaching governor. I came to Springwood in 2018 as a teaching assistant in the Nurture and Wellbeing provision, and am now in the ASC resource base.
I see inclusivity and learning for all as an essential part of all children’s formative years. I can see this in action every day, not only in the ASC but right across the school.
I look forward to contributing to the success of Springwood in my role as a governor.
