School of Sanctuary

At Springwood, we are working toward obtaining the ‘School of Sanctuary’ award. It is important to us as a school to make all that join our Springwood family feel welcomed and supported if they have taken a journey to seek sanctuary. We foster a culture of welcome for all seeking sanctuary including refugees and asylum seeker families.

We aim to educate our staff and the whole school community about the experiences and realities of those who have been forced to flee their country. As part of this we took part in the ‘Day of Welcome’ on the 14th June 2024 and refugee week from the 17th-21st of June. These were extremely important and successful days of learning and understanding discussing this years ‘Day of Welcome’ theme - our home. We welcomed all children to come to school dressed in clothing that represents themselves, their ethnicity and their culture.

This Years Events at Springwood

This year’s second annual Iftar for Ramadan brought together an incredible turnout from both our school and the wider local community, creating a powerful sense of unity and shared celebration. The event not only deepened cultural understanding and respect among pupils, families, and staff, but also strengthened the bonds within our diverse community. For many families, it was a meaningful opportunity to share traditions, connect with others, and feel a strong sense of belonging and support.

Our Eid parties for the children were joyful and lively celebrations, filled with traditional music and refreshments. Our parties offered a fun and festive atmosphere where pupils could enjoy the spirit of Eid with their peers, while also learning about its cultural significance. The parties helped foster a sense of inclusion and belonging, allowing children to celebrate their identity and traditions in a warm and welcoming school environment.

Our Lunar New Year celebration was a vibrant and enriching experience that brought families and the local community together in a joyful exploration of culture and tradition. With activities such as creating lanterns, writing Chinese pinyin, exploring pentatonic scales, making wishes on the wishing tree, and discovering fortunes through scratch cards, the event offered something meaningful for everyone. These hands-on experiences not only deepened cultural understanding but also sparked curiosity and creativity among students and families alike, strengthening the sense of community and shared celebration.
